Weight-loss Surgery Safe For Less Obese Patients

New research shows that adaptable gastric banding, a kind of weight-loss surgery that reduces the size of the stomach, is safe in folks who are obese mildly. The surgery has been available to severely obese patients for ten years, but the new study evaluated the risks and benefits of the procedure in those who were mildly obese.

The research was led by bariatric cosmetic surgeon Esteban Varela, MD, now at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Results of the new study, available online in the journal Obesity Surgery, coincide with a recent decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to expand the use of gastric banding surgery in those who find themselves mildly obese. “That is a significant step in weight problems treatment,” says Varela, associate teacher of surgery.

“Medical dangers even in mildly obese people can be life-threatening as time passes. Gastric banding surgery is currently available to adults with a BMI of 30 or even more if they have one obesity-related health, such as high bloodstream diabetes or pressure. Previously, patients could only have they surgery if a BMI was acquired by them of 35 or more.

A one who is 5 ft 5 ins tall with diabetes would need to weigh 210 pounds to qualify for the task under the old guidelines. Now, see your face would just need to weigh 180 pounds. About 27 million Americans have a BMI between 30 and 35 and at least one obesity-related health.

In the study, Varela compared final results in 30 consecutive obese patients who underwent laparoscopic variable gastric banding surgery. Twenty patients were severely obese, and 10 were mildly obese. All the patients had attempted to lose weight through medical weight loss programs but hadn’t succeeded. The patients were followed by The analysts for thirty days after the surgery. They found the task was just as safe in less obese patients as in those who had been severely obese.

None of the patients in the analysis died, and minimal complications, while few, only occurred among those who were obese significantly. In addition, the procedure could be performed faster and led to less blood loss among those who have been mildly obese. “The task is safe, and has the potential to help a lot more mildly obese patients lose weight and improve health related conditions, diabetes particularly,” Varela says. “These patients frequently have struggled for years to lose excess weight through diet and exercise programs and have not prevailed.

This minimally invasive surgical procedure involves insertion of the silicone gastric music group that fits around the top part of the tummy, restricting the quantity of food a person can eat and lowering appetite. The band can be loosened or tightened to modify the size of the stomach. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is merely one type of weight-loss surgery that is performed by Washington University surgeons at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which is designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. The research was funded by a New Investigator Research Grant Award from the Veterans Administration HEALTHCARE System. Varela JE, et al.
